Ian Fujiyama Global Head of Aerospace, Defense and Government, Carlyle Bloomberg Markets
Middle-market defense opportunities are reopening.
Fujiyama launched a middle-market defense platform because more than 30 years of consolidation left a few large primes and hollowed out the middle, creating a deep ecosystem of small innovative companies that need scale and industrial relevance. He says the market is reopening: Carlyle's pipeline is about three times its historical high, defense M&A deal count is up roughly 140% while average deal size is down about 60%, and the firm has closed national-security deals in encryption, cyber, and hypersonics.
